01 — The problem
A 340-store chain with high churn: around 40 % of floor staff turn over each year. Onboarding worked like this — a mentor in the store explained things as best they could, then the new hire took a paper test. Quality depended entirely on the mentor, results got lost, and HR could not answer who had completed what.
02 — What we built
Designed for a phone, not a desktop
There is no computer for a sales assistant on a shop floor. The whole platform is built as a mobile interface that opens in a phone browser during a shift. A lesson is scoped to seven minutes, which is how long a break lasts.
Courses, tests, mandatory tracks
HR assembles a course from video, text and quizzes. A role gets a track: a new sales assistant must complete six courses in two weeks, and if they do not, the store manager sees it in their report.
Video that loads on a bad connection
Uploaded video is transcoded to three qualities with FFmpeg and the player picks by connection speed. This was critical: some stores have slow internet, and without it the platform would simply have gone unused.
Reporting across 340 stores
A manager sees their store, a regional director their region, HR everything. Reports are precomputed and cached, because a live query across the whole chain would take minutes.
